Hammer FC has continues to grow and evolve to better serve the training and development needs of players. Hammer’s mission is focused on player development.  What we stand for is player development;  nothing more, nothing less.  We believe that through robust soccer training, the Technical Staff members will "bring out the best soccer player, you can be."  The staff promises to work hard on the player’s behalf.  They expect that player work hard on their own behalf.   

This organizational structure is designed to deliver robust training throughout the developmental years of the player.  It is designed to drive consistency of technical skill development across ages and genders during a players younger years in at Hammer FC, while driving consistency of tactical and technical skill development specific to gender needs at the older ages. We have continuously focused on delivering one thing; better training. It is through better training that we believe we prepare Hammer players to perform at their best; to develop to their fullest.

You truly will not find a better collection of more dedicated directors anywhere.  They are here because they love the game. They are at Hammer because they love to train and develop young athletes.  Hammer FC is incredibly proud of our Staff.  We will continue to tweak our structure to ensure that we always provide the best for Hammer players.

Ryan Handbury
Youth Development Academy; U7 - U9 Boys and Girls

Ryan Handbury comes to Hammer FC with experience only a battle hardened player can bring.

Ryan excelled in a club setting, playing for the prestigious Nottingham Forest Academy. Handbury represented Nottingham Forest from the age of 11 and was taken on as a fulltime, 3 year scholar at the age of 16. In this time he was invited to join the U18 England National team on three seperate occasion playing alongside or against world renowned strikers Aaron Lennon, Theo Walcott, and Wayne Rooney to name a few.

In 2006, Ryan moved to the United States and attended school at University of Dayton.  As a member of the UD soccer team, Handbury was one of three Flyers to start all 17 games, was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Honorable Mention Team and earned a spot on the 2006 All-Ohio Second Team given out by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association. 

In 2007, Handbury once again was stellar at the center back position for the Flyers.  He played every minute and started all 19 games for UD.  Ryan was selected for the NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Region Third Team.  At one point during the 2007 season, the Flyers did not allow a goal in 282:25 minutes of play.

In 2008, the Flyers’ Iron Man, Handbury played all 2,043 minutes on the pitch and is one of three UD players to start all 22 games.  UD posted eight shutouts in 2008, including the A-10 Championship game.  At one point during the season, the defense did not allow a goal in 455:05 minutes, all against A-10 opponents which spurred UD to an eight-game unbeaten streak.  In 17 of their 22 games, Handbury and the UD defense allowed opponents just one goal or less.  Ryan started the season by earning the coveted "Red Jersey" which goes to the individual who is a symbol of physical and mental determination, competition, and pride and closed the season with the Coaches Achievement Award for his persistence and dedication. He was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team and was named Atlantic 10 Honorable Mention for the third consecutive season and selected for the NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Region Third Team for the second straight season.

In 2009, as a senior, Handbury made every start for the Flyers, leading the team in minutes played this season with 1,848. Ryan was the Atlantic 10 leader in assists with eight on the year, including two assists in a decisive 3-0 victory over No. 11 Charlotte (Oct. 30) at Baujan Field.  He was named to the Preseason All Conference Team, the Atlantic 10 First Team and the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team.  In addition, Ryan was selected to the OCSA All-Ohio First Team and presented with the Coaches Achievement Award at the team’s annual end of the year banquet.

In his playing career, Ryan has played for Nottingham Forest Football Club (ENG), University of Dayton (USA), Chicago Fire PDL (USA), Ottawa Fury PDL (CAN), and Eastwood Town (ENG).

Jason Peters
Youth Development Academy; U7 - U9 Boys and Girls

Jason Peters hails from Birmingham, England. He has played semi professional soccer in England and also played for the Southampton Solent University Mens team for all three years he was there. While Jason was playing for his university he won the Hampshire Premier League. Jason has a B.A. (Hons) Football Studies with Business Degree from Southampton Solent University where he worked closely with Professional side Southampton Football Club, with coaching and match analysis. During his time at University Jason also was awarded his UEFA ’C’ Goalkeeping License. 

Jason has been coaching since the age of 15 where he coached with Birmingham City Football Club for six years. During his time there Jason worked with the Football in the community department, Development centers and Academy programs where he helped young talent try and break in to the clubs academy. Jason currently holds the UEFA ’C’ badge and achieved this award at the young age of 17.

 

Rashawn "Shawn" Lamar
U10-U12 Boys; Speed Coach

Shawn comes to us from the Tampa, FL area where he trained with various clubs and operated his own speed and agility training business, FRL Speed. Shawn left the Tampa area from 2006-2007 to work with the TSC-Texans of Houston, Texas. While there, he trained, coached and managed several teams, ages U11-U14.

Shawn has worked for several years with the Nike SPARQ training program in camps and the evaluation of collegiate and professional athletes. He has also worked for Velocity Sports Performance as a speed and agility coach/trainer.

He played collegiately at Coker College (Hartsville, SC) from 1997-2001, where he was a 1st Team All-Conference player for two years (Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference), and the conference’s leading scorer with 15 goals (16 games) in 1999. He opened the 2000 season with four goals in the first three games.

Upon leaving Coker, Shawn played several years in the USL for the Greenville Lions, the Cocoa Expos and the Tampa Bay Nighthawks. In 2006, he played in the Faroe Islands for KI Klaksvik.

Shawn has a B.A. in Exercise Science and Fitness Programming and is a certified Speed and Agility trainer. He also holds a USSF ‘C’ License.

Russell Lewis
U10-U12 Girls; Youth Development Academy; U7 - U9 Boys and Girls

Russell Lewis hails from Bristol, England. In his youth, Lewis played semi-professional soccer and has been coaching for 12 years, In 2004 Lewis Founded S.T.A.R.S Soccer Training Academy & Results System (www.russelllewisstars.com) that has grown from Bristol, England to New York, Philadelphia and now Ohio.

Qualified at UEFA ‘B’ level and NSCAA Regional Diploma, in 2006, Lewis became the Director of Training of Longwood Soccer (LYSA) coaching players 3-18 years old. In spring 2008, became the Head Goalkeeping Coach at Long Island University (LIU).

In the fall of 2008, Lewis was employed as Head Varsity Coach at Eastport South Manor High School. In his first season they reached the play-offs for the first time in four years; because of this feat Lewis and his team won the Suffolk County Sportsmanship Award.   

In June 2009, Russell obtained his USSF National Youth License. 

Most recently to gain experience Lewis had a short stint as Assistant Coach for Cincinnati State Men’s & has worked as for USL Pro Club Dayton Dutch Lion as Head Goalkeeper Coach, Lewis is employed as State Staff for ODP and was names as Head Coach for 98 girls for Ohio South In 2010.

Lewis joined Hammer FC as the Director of the YDA (Youth Development Academy) and U8-9 program.  With the YDA, Lewis was very successful at bridging the “Gap” between Recreation soccer & Select/Travel soccer, facilitating the needs of players aged 4-8 that desire an academy style learning environment.  As director of the U8-9 program, Russell promoted development first and was instrumental in moving the Hammer FC youth program into the EPL, a no-scores, no-results, developmental league.

Now, as Director of U10 - U12 girls, Lewis is looking to make Hammer FC’s girls program the best in the city for years to come.

Russell recently moved in to Newtown with his wife Ryann who works for Beacon Orthopedics on Beechmont Ave. as a qualified Medical Assistant.  Lewis is medically certified for both adults and children in CPR and AED.

Derrick Ayers
U13-15 Boys; Goalkeeper Coordinator

Derrick Ayers joins Hammer FC as the Director of Coaching for the Boy’s U13-U15 program. He comes to Cincinnati from North Carolina where he was the Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at Pfeiffer University. In 2010 Pfeiffer won the Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament going 13-6-2 on the year. He was responsible for goalkeeper training and oversaw a shutout streak that spanned 962 minutes. In 2009 Ayers worked with the University of South Carolina Women’s Soccer Team that won the SEC Tournament Championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament with a final record of 19-4-2.

Ayers was the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Arcadia University from 2006-2008. In his first season in charge the Knights went undefeated in the PaAC winning the Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships, and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to his time at Arcadia, Ayers spent three years as the Assistant Men’s Coach at Washington & Jefferson College, in Washington PA. During his time at W&J the President’s enjoy their most successful period in the history of the program, winning President’s Athletic Conference Regular Season Championships in 2003 and 2005, and winning the PAC Conference Tournament Championship in 2003 and 2004. In 2005 the Presidents received their first ever bid to the NCAA tournament. During this three year span the team broke nearly every school record and set a new school record for wins in a season each year.

In addition Ayers spent the 2000 season at MacMurry College in Jacksonville, IL as the Assistant Men’s coach where the team finished 13-6-1. He also has experience coaching at the youth level with the Baltimore Bays Soccer Club, North Stars Soccer Club in Pittsburgh, FC Bucks in Philadelphia, FC Carolina Alliance in Charlotte; as well as with Maryland, PA West, and North Carolina ODP programs. Ayers spent six summers working for former US Women’s National Team Coach Tony DiCicco at SoccerPlus Camps.

As a player Ayers spent four years at Coker College (NCAA DII) in Hartsville, SC. He also spent one year in Wales as a student where he played for Carmarthen Towne AFC and Trinity College FC. He has BA in History and Political Science from Illinois College in Jacksonville, IL.

During his time as a coach Ayers has worked with numerous NSCAA All Region and All American players at the college level, and many youth players that have gone on to be successful at all levels of college. He currently holds a USSF B License and an NSCAA Premier Diploma.

Clay Revis
U13-U15 Girls

Clay Revis has been a fixture in the Ohio South soccer community since 1983. He started coaching soccer with the North East Soccer Club in 1983. Coach Revis moved to the Girls Southeast Cardinals in 1986 where his girls 1975 team won an Ohio South State Cup, Region II championship and WAGS Championship in 1987. He was Ohio South Coach of the Year in 1987. Clay continued with the Cardinals until 1989.

Clay founded Hammer FC 1989 with the intent to raise the level of play of women’s soccer in the state of Ohio. Hammer FC was the State Runner-up in 1991. Hammer FC won the Ohio South state championship and was the Region II runner up in 1992. Revis led the Hammer FC team to the State, Regional, and National championship in 1993. Hammer FC claimed the 1st Ohio South National Championship and Revis was named Ohio South 1993 Coach of the Year. Hammer FC was a National Championship semi-finalist in 1994. Players who have played for Revis have continued on to win 12 NCAA Division I championships and Division III championships. Hammer FC program graduates have played and flourished at some of the top college programs.

Revis was Head Coach at Walnut Hills HS from 1984-1987 and Middletown HS from 1989-1993 where his teams were Regional Runner-Up in 1985,1987,1991, and 1993. Clay is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and lives with his wife Lori in Pierce Township.

Sam Miller
U16-U18 Men

Sam came to Hammer in the 2009 Spring season.  He is a local product growing up in the Anderson area.  Sam played club soccer for Team Cincinnati and then Cincinnati United Premier where he was team captain from 2002 to 2004. He played high school ball at Anderson High School where he was a perennial All-Star and was Captain his 2001 and 2002 seasons.  He was named Fort Ancient Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2002 and was an All-FAVC selection from 2000-02.

After Anderson High School, Sam went to the University of Cincinnati and earned a degree in Criminal Justice.  Sam played Varsity all four years and started 68 of 77 games.  He was voted captain for the 2005 and 2006 seasons.  Sam was also voted to the 2003 Conference USA All-Freshmen Team and was selected for the SMU All-Tournament Team in 2006.  During his playing years at UC, the Bearcats were the Conference USA regular season Champs in 2003 and the Big East regular season Champs in 2006.  Sam had the privilege of making NCAA College Cup appearances in both 2003 and 2006.

In 2007-2008 as the assistant coach for Northern Kentucky University, Miller helped lead the Norse to a 22-2 record. The team won the GLVC Regular Season Conference championship going unbeaten 20-0, was ranked #1 in the nation by NSCAA for five weeks and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.

During the 2008-2009 year, Sam was an assistant coach for the University of Cincinnati and helped the program advance to its 4th consecutive Big East Tournament in 2008.

Sam also serves as the Anderson High School Girl’s Varsity Assistant where he gets the privilege to coach with his father, Bil Miller (former Hammer Girls Coach).  Since 2008, Anderson High School Girls have won consecutive Sectional Championships in ’08, ’09 and in 2010 won Sectional, District, Regional Championships advancing to the State Final 4 for the first time since 1991. In that time, 13 Division I players have played for the program.

Sam currently holds NSCAA National, Advanced National and Premier (equivalent to a USSF A-B license) Diplomas.

 

Tiffany Roberts
U16-U18 Women; Club Manager

Tiffany, a native of Phoenix, Arizona, where she played for Sereno Soccer Club, that is ranked one of the top 15 clubs in the nation, came to Hammer in the 2009 spring season.  While at Sereno, she led them to three state championships, a Region IV semifinal, Region IV quarterfinal, and a Region IV runner-up.  She was team captain all her years of club soccer.

She played high school soccer for Arcadia High School, where she was a three-time Arizona 4A Player of the Year, name 2002 First Team All-Arizona, a three-time All –Region honoree, and a two-time All-State team member.  While there, she led the team to the 2001 4A State Championship and 2000 Regional Championship.  Entering her senior season, which she didn’t play, she had a career 67 goals and registered 56 assists. She was team captain her sophomore and junior year.

In 2003, she was invited to play in the McDonalds All-America game and was named to that All-American team.  She was a member of the Arizona State Olympic Developmental team from 1998-2002 and a Region IV team member in 2001 and 2002.

After high school, Tiffany went to Santa Clara University where she was a four-year starter and received her degree in Communications.  She was captain her senior year and while there had the privilege of playing in four NCAA College Cup appearances.  In 2004, Santa Clara reached the Final Four and lost to Notre Dame who became the eventual NCAA College Cup National Champions.  During her freshman year, she was named to the Soccer Buzz West Region All-Freshman team and was an honorable mention All-West Coach Conference Honoree.  As a sophomore, she was an honorable mention All-WCC selection and was named to both Soccer America’s and Soccer Buzz’s Elite Teams.  As a junior, she was named to the All-WCC Second Team.  Early in her senior year, she suffered a season-ending knee injury thus missing the rest of her senior year and losing a year of eligibility.

Tiffany currently holds a “D” license.

Dr. Howard Schertzinger Staff Physician

Hammer FC is proud to have Dr. Howard Schertzinger as Club Physician.  In his role, Dr. Schertzinger will work closely with our Directors of Coaching to ensure the physical well being of our players.

Howard J. Schertzinger Jr., MD is President and Chief Operating Officer of Advanced Pain Solutions in West Chester, Ohio, specializing in non-surgical spine and orthopedics.  He is Adjunct Professor, Medical Director, and Team Physician at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He also serves as team physician for The Summit Country Day High School, Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy, Classic Hammer FC and Flip and Twist Gymnastics.  His office serves as a Community Preceptor site for Ohio State medical students.  

Dr. Schertzinger’s research interests include osteoarthritis, pain management and medical illness in sports medicine.  He is a nationally recognized speaker on the topics of sports medicine, osteoarthritis and pain management including participation in the Arthritis Huddle.

Dr. Schertzinger is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, and American College of Sports Medicine.  He is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, in Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics.  Dr. Schertzinger holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.

Dr. Schertzinger received his undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati, his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio followed by his residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.  He completed his fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of North Carolina.

He resides in Loveland, Ohio with his wife Kathleen and children Meredith, Henry, and Harrison.
